This work emerged from years of exploring spontaneous painting, pareidolia (seeing patterns-like faces--in random shapes), and the relationship between perception and creativity. What began as an artistic investigation into finding forms within abstract paint gradually developed into a broader inquiry into how humans create meaning through interaction with ambiguity and uncertainty.
Influenced by expressive arts practices, process philosophy, and contemplative traditions, we began to recognize that the creative process itself could function as a mode of insight, integration, and transformation. Rather than treating imagination as separate from reality, this work approaches image-making as a participatory dialogue between mind, body, material, and environment.
Over time, these explorations evolved into a structured yet open-ended methodology that combines fluid painting, guided pareidolia, mindful attention, and dialogical image development. Today, my work continues to investigate how aesthetic experience can support creativity, self-reflection, and embodied engagement with the unfolding complexity of human experience.
The Emergent Imagery Process is a non-interpretive visual arts approach grounded in the expressive arts tradition, designed to support intuitive perception and image-based reflection. Using spontaneous marks, textures, and pigment flows, participants allow unplanned imagery to arise—and engage with it in a dialogic way. Rooted in pareidolia and supported by mindfulness, the process emphasizes emergence over analysis, expression over outcome, and awareness over meaning. It can be used in wellness, spiritual, or therapeutic environments to support creativity, self-awareness, and emotional integration.

Pareidolia Pathways is a process-based expressive arts practices that explores creativity, perception, and transformation through spontaneous image-making. Rooted in spontaneous art, pareidolia, contemplative philosophy, and embodied creative process, our work invites participants to engage ambiguity and uncertainty as a space of discovery rather than something to be controlled or resolved. Through guided interaction with emergent imagery, participants cultivate presence, insight, and new relationships to perception, imagination, and meaning-making.
Our approach bridges expressive arts, contemplative traditions, and contemporary creativity research, offering accessible, nonjudgmental experiences centered on process rather than artistic skill or predetermined outcomes.
Participatory pareidolia merges the evocative visual ambiguity of Rorschach imagery with the open-ended, self-guided ethos of expressive arts. The participant creates spontaneous visual material (through ink, water, charcoal, etc.) and actively searches for emergent forms, engaging in a dialogue with the image that evolves through touch, reflection, and creative decision-making. Rather than diagnosing, this method supports meaning-making, integration, and personal insight — empowering participants to explore their inner world nonverbally and non-judgmentally.

We believe creativity is not simply the production of ideas or objects, but a way of participating in the living processes of perception, transformation, and emergence.
Our philosophy is grounded in the understanding that meaning does not arise through rigid control or fixed interpretation alone, but through sustained engagement with uncertainty, ambiguity, and change. In pareidolic image-making, ambiguous marks become landscapes, figures, symbols, and narratives—not because meaning is imposed onto chaos, but because perception itself is relational, dynamic, and creative.
Drawing from contemplative philosophies such as Tiantai Buddhism, expressive arts theory, and process-oriented aesthetics, we view opposites such as structure and spontaneity, imagination and perception, emptiness and form, not as contradictions to eliminate, but as mutually participating aspects of experience.
Our work encourages participants to remain open to multiple meanings, shifting perspectives, and emergent forms. Rather than seeking immediate resolution or interpretation, we cultivate attentiveness to the unfolding process itself—where insight, transformation, and creativity arise together.
